Voces 8, DePauwcapella, DePauw Chamber Singers, a potent combination

October 11, 2012

Another packed house welcomed special guests VOCES 8 on their visit to the US and DePauw last night. The music began even before concert time with DePauwcapella, the great student-led acapella group comprised of College of Liberal Arts and School of Music students, performing a popup in the great hall. They then processed into the concert hall and continued to perform to the thrilled and surprised audience. Voces 8, on a short tour of the US before returning to England and then on to France, stepped on the stage and captivated the audience for 80 minutes of great music. The house was filled with CLA students, SOM Students, DePauw faculty and staff and many enthused community members, all thoroughly enjoying the great mix of music presented. The surprise of the evening came when Voces 8 invited the Depauw Chamber Singers on stage to perform. After working with them earlier in the day, Voces 8 decided the talent of the chamber singers was worthy of a special performance on their concert. And worthy it was.

So much to like about a simple Wednesday night in Greencastle, Indiana: a packed house, great music, the enthusiasm and love of music of DePauwcapella, the accomplishment and poise of the chamber singers, the mastery and beauty of the international sensation Voces 8 and a community of people to take it all in and reward it with ovations of praise and thanks.

Plato had it right: Musical training is a more powerful instrument than any other, for rhythm and harmony find their way to the inner places of the soul.

And so it was last night.
